Coalition Legislative Day May 2006

By Gary Horwin DC

The 2006 Chiropractic Coalition Legislative Day was held on Thursday, May 4 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Members and supporters of the FSCO, WCA, and ICA attended.

Driving up to the Hyatt Regency on Wednesday evening you could see the lit up Capitol Building just a few blocks ahead. The majestic beauty only being overshadowed by the feeling of awesome power held within. It was difficult to sleep feeling the excitement the next day would bring. Tomorrow morning United States Senators and Congressman would come to the Hyatt to speak to the Chiropractic profession. Many Chiropractors had also set up appointments to visit their own state Representatives. Chiropractic would leave its mark in Washington. A statement will be sent that the Chiropractic profession is interested in and affected by the decisions made on a national level. We want to be involved and have our opinions considered.

At eight-thirty Thursday morning the room was filling up as the first speaker began. After they finished one of the Chiropractic lobbyist discussed the talking points that were distributed for us to use when we visited our U.S. congressman. By now the room was filled with hundreds of Chiropractors and students. Former Congressman Ed Shrock then spoke to us on  “maximizing your lobbying effectiveness”. Over the remainder of the morning the group was addressed by Senator Jim DeMintt R-SC, Congresswomen Thelma Drake R-VA and Shelly Berkley D-NV and Congressmen Bob Filner D-CA and Bob Inglis R-SC. I was especially impressed with Senator DeMint. He discussed his view on the future of health care in the United States in relation to Health Savings Accounts. The upcoming trend is for employers to buy less expensive health care polices with higher deductibles for their employees and place a certain amount of additional money aside in HSA’s for each of them. The money from the HSA would be used by each employee at their discretion for the type of health care they chose.

Around ten-thirty our contingency of students and Chiropractors from Pennsylvania formed in the back of the room as we prepared to walk the few blocks to our scheduled visit at U.S. Senator Rick Santorum’s office. We were scheduled to visit the other Pennsylvania U.S. Senator, Arlen Spector, in the afternoon. We were armed with the talking points and walked together to the Senator’s office. Entering his office I noted that there were a few other groups waiting to speak to the Senator’s aids. We were by far the largest. We were met by two aids and ushered into a large conference room. We discussed the issues with those aids as they diligently took notes. They were well informed on the issues we discussed. The meeting lasted for about a half an hour. We then returned to the Hyatt to listen to the other Congressman. Lunch was served as we listened to Wesley Pruden who is a nationally syndicated political commentator and Editor on Chief of the Washington Times.

The Coalition third annual Legislative Day was a huge success as were the previous two. It is imperative for straight Chiropractic to have a presence in Washington. A filled room shows our national leaders that we want to be involved in decisions that effect the Chiropractic profession and shows respect for the Senators and Representatives who come to address us. Much of what is done on a national level will filter down to the states and effect all practicing Chiropractors. There is a great deal of satisfaction for the Chiropractors and students attending. Being part of the national political process that effects the future of our profession. Meeting and discussing issues with the leaders of our country. The only thing missing was many of you. Show your support for the Straight Chiropractic community by attending next years Legislative Day in the spring of 2007. Make a difference. It’s one day out of your life that I promise will be exciting and educational.
